Detect & Discover with DNA
Imagine looking out your window and a Triceratops walks by!
Have you ever wondered if the dinosaurs could be brought back? Scientists have been cloning animals for years. Is it even possible to clone a dinosaur? Is it a good idea?
Mrs. Joan Batson will teach this exciting science enrichment series to explore DNA, Deoxyribonucleic Acid, and its importance in science and crime investigation. We will perform hands-on experiments and activities, including the extraction of real DNA!
In this program we will learn about the DNA molecule, the instruction manual for all of life on earth. These molecules can be found in cell nuclei. DNA tells each cell what its job is, whether a skin cell, bone cell, or brain cell. And this is where all the information that determines your physical traits is stored, such as eye color and hair color; it even decides if you are a human or a banana!
DNA is the real hero of whodunits. Learn how different sources of DNA are used to solve crime. Discover how DNA is used in conservation efforts to help prevent the extinction of diverse species. Scientists are using DNA to determine the relationships between organisms. We will construct a DNA sequence and then use a national science database to see who or what has these patterns and traits in common. Find out who is a bear’s closest cousin. You may be surprised!
So, about that Triceratops…
Sessions will be held on Tuesday January 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 3:30-4:45 p.m. in the EHUE Art Room - Room 242. Space is limited to 20 students, and cost is $75 per student.
Join local chess teacher Jules Coulson for the Fall season of after-school chess classes! Each class will begin with a lesson where students learn openings, master games, tactics and strategies, and important endgame ideas. After the lesson, students will get a chance to apply the ideas they’ve learned as they play in competition games against each other. This class is open to all Eden Hall students of all skill levels - students should have basic knowledge of how chess pieces move.

2018-2019 Changes to Gifted Education at Pine-Richland
"For the 2018 - 2019 school year, we reviewed the Social Studies Department and also modified the process for programming related to Gifted and/or Highly Achieving students. In this particular case, the team modified some elements of the in-depth program review process given the differences between a traditional content area versus an approach to meet the needs of a specific population of students."
